I watched the BBC documentary Are Our Kids Tough Enough? (Chinese title: 《我们的孩子足够坚强吗?》) about Chinese education, and it really struck a chord with me. I could definitely relate to the scenes of rigorous study routines and high expectations, as it reminded me of my own childhood education experience.

There were moments when I couldn’t help but laugh, especially seeing the British students struggle to adapt to the Chinese style of learning. The contrast was so stark, with the British students often overwhelmed by the strict discipline and intense focus on rote memorization. It was almost surreal to watch them fidget in class, as I remembered how normal it was for me to sit through long hours of lectures and drills.

At the same time, there was a sense of irony in the situation. The documentary showed how the Chinese system has produced high-achieving students, but at what cost? The pressure and lack of emotional support in this type of education system seem to drain the joy from learning. It made me reflect on my own experiences – how we were often so focused on exams and grades that the love of learning got lost along the way.

In the laughter and irony of the documentary, I found myself deeply reflecting on the balance between academic achievement and personal well-being. It’s a tricky question: how do we foster resilience in children without breaking their spirits? It seems like the Chinese system may build toughness, but it also risks sacrificing a child’s happiness, creativity, and mental health.

I think the documentary was a valuable reminder that education should not just focus on toughness or academic performance but on nurturing well-rounded individuals who can thrive emotionally, socially, and intellectually. It was an eye-opening watch that made me think more critically about how education systems impact kids in different parts of the world.
